While I was at SXSW I had the opportunity to have a chat with Andrew Apostola, the Creative Director of the successful Australian ‘virtual film festival’ Portable.
Each year they curate a festival that happens purely in the virtual realm. ‘Visitors’ access screenings, premiers and other events via whatever electronic device they have to hand - PDAs, mobile phones, laptops, iTV, etc.
As he points out, the number of visitors they attract is much bigger than many ‘real world’ events and it is now being taken seriously - one of the shorts shown at the event recently won an Oscar.
This is a four-minute edit of our conversation, where I ask him what it takes to build a successful online film festival using cross-media, cross-platform tools and content to make it work.
Thinking about submitting a film? The call for entries just went out for this year’s festival.

Great interview. Sounds like a really great project to work on.
