Name in Lights: And the winner is… Una White

Una White

The winner of the Name in Lights project was announced last night at a champagne reception in Birmingham city centre.

She was nominated by her daughter CJ to have her name made into fifteen-foot high hollywood lettering, and I couldn’t imagine a more deserving winner. Here’s what CJ said about her in her nomination:

My beautiful mother displayed strength and determination depicted in her journey through the 1960’s from Jamaica to England. She represented, cultivated and encapsulated the spirit of life in her heart and this conveyed to other people - all ages & race. She was very altruistic in her nature and for over 30 years worked as a devoted nurse caring for the sick and the severely mentally disabled.

It would therefore be very apt that 10 years after her death that her name should have the opportunity to light the skylines of Birmingham and would be the epitome of hope, faith, overcoming adversity, effervescent and cultural unity.

My mother was a role model to her daughters and her grandchildren too. Her sprit and faith lives on within us and the memories of her beautiful smile continue to shine everlasting in our personal journeys and her lasting footprint continues to guide us.

Here’s a video from the moment the lights were switched on:

I nominated my mother’s name. I’m so proud of what she achieved in her life - she would have loved ‘Name in Lights’ launch event and the media attention. We, her family enjoyed the launch event and will continue the debate amongst strangers, friends and family about the notion of celebrity in the 21st century v family values + being a role model to your loved ones and within your community.

Judges - thank you for selecting my entry.
