For the past few years, I’ve had a pretty simple personal rule that I try to abide by every day. It is:
“Create something new every day”
You can see it at the top of my blog (assuming you’re not just visiting via RSS) and although it sounds simple, it’s deceptively hard!
I came up with the idea while I was recovering from an acute, rare and frightening illness when I was at at Birmingham University.
I’ve already posted about my personal non-religious viewpoint, and having had my own mortality rudely revealed to me at a young age (20) I realised that given that this is the only life I’ve got, I had better make the most of it. So I reached for a notepad and started drawing, sketching, coming up with ideas. Since then, it’s not exactly been easy sticking to my “every day” rule, but in the main I’ve been pretty successful.
This week, though, I’ve decided on a little test. It’s the silly season, so a lot of clients are on holiday and the market for new web work tends to slow dow for the month. We’ve got some exciting work going on and some tight deadlines to meet (when isn’t this the case?!), but it’s mostly during the busiest periods I tend to be my most creative in and out of work. Plus, I’ve just recovered from being ill (nothing life-threatening) for about a week, so I need something to get my brain back into gear.
So my test for myself is to do a daily post on this site where I will be posting _something_ (or maybe multiple things) that I have created each day.
But first a definition - what does “create” mean? Surely I’ve just “created” lots of carbon dioxide just by breathing a number of times while writing this post?
So, firing up Google, I came across this handy definition:
Aside from the extremely tempting suggestion that I should use my first day’s effort to build my “dream robot”, which turns out, rather disappointingly to be a vacuum cleaner ( teleporting Transformer/chef idea shelved), I’ll choose…. let me see…. Number 4, please.
“To produce through artistic or imaginative effort”
Okay, so now I have my timeframe, I have my aim, let’s hope I can stick to it!
