Last night the crew from the SXSWM trip got together for what we were calling the ‘Post SXSW Brain Dump’ which is available as a 1 hr 15 min video on Bambuser.
Those present (left to right): Joanna Geary, Ruth Ward, Nick Lockey, Me - Stef Lewandowski, Pete Ashton and Dom Murphy.
The idea was that we’d all sit in a quiet room, set up a camera and a microphone and simultaneously broadcast and record a conversation summarising some of the ideas that we’ve taken away from the trip. This worked to some degree, but I left a cable at home so we had to make do with a webcam (apologies).
We met at the Lloyds TSB Board Room at the Hippodrome which Rob MacPherson kindly offered us at very short notice. Thanks Rob, and thanks to Ruth for arranging it.
There was no WIFI, so we relied on Jo’s 3G card in her laptop for internet access. We used Bambuser as a place for us to broadcast and to have a live chat interface going on at the same time. It wasn’t exactly crammed with users, but we did have 7 active commenters and who knows how many lurkers. Thanks for your input everyone!
It turned into a quite exciting discussion that was good fun to be part of, and I think makes interesting viewing (or rather listening - the webcam’s field of view was a little too narrow to see everyone at once).
Jo got a copy of the online chat discussion that went along with the video, which apparently isn’t archived on Bambuser for good or bad.
One of the questions at the end was if I would put up my backlog of posts as titles so that people could choose which ones are of most interest for me to write about. Here they are…
My backlog of SXSW blog posts. Which ones do you want?
I mentioned that I still had a backlog of posts to get through which is actually getting longer.

I’d vote for 10, 12, 13, 15 & 23. And 20 I guess.
Hmm, my preference for ‘how to’s and practicalities over conceptualising is showing.
i was one of those lurkers, i caught the latter part of the session so didn’t get around to signing up… enjoyed what i heard so will be watching the whole sesh at some point.
I vote 7, 8, 12, 15, 20 and 23 as priority please.
Hiya Stef,
Watched this live because as well as being interested in the content, I thought it would be a good introduction to Bambuser for me.
The discussion was really interesting but I found the online chat a bit distracting and it did deteriorate into school playground on several occasions. Been thinking about solutions to this. Perhaps if all of the live participants could see the online chat, people would keep their comments more focussed? I guess this would be too distracting for speakers as thought processes would be interrupted while reading comments? Not sure what the answer is really.
Another thing was that there is an audible alert on Bambuser when someone enters an online comment. Not sure if it’s poss to turn those off but still keep the presentation audio.
Oh yeah and I agree that it would have been nice to see all of the speakers.
Anyway, overall a positive experience
It was really interesting to be a part of that, thanks for broadcasting it. Its true that the online discussion was sometimes a bit of a distraction, but at other times we were having a discussion relevant to what was being discussed on camera, and it was great to have Jo acting as a “filter”, selecting the best comments and questions to relay into the offline conversation. I think it probably worked better than if all 7 of us were physically present; something tells me that it would have been much less civilised (!) and potentially less interesting.
After being the first to suggest you post your backblog for us to vote on, I’m now going to disappoint you by not being able to choose between them, they all look quite fascinating. Maybe you could do some of them as podcasts, perhaps as a part-scripted conversation with somebody, if that’s quicker? Or just take a few days off work and write all of them
I’ll take “Ideas for Academics” please, Stef.
Missed it live but caught it later that evening. Really good way of involving everyone and really liked the ‘live’ unedited feel of the whole conversation. 7 and 15 would be cool if we’re voting.
